There are just a few days left to earn points for the Bluff Magazine’s Online Player of the Year 2009 title... And at this stage there seems to be little chance left for major changes in the top ranks. There has been some significant movement around the middle ranks though. Here is the most recently updated list of front runners and favourites for this year’s OPOY title:

2009’s most promising new players

After a year’s worth of competitive poker play, a few individuals have achieved unexpected international poker stardom. Here’s some of this year’s most inspiring rise to fame stories:
Joseph “Joe” Cada:
21 year old Joe Cada made his first appearance into the poker scene at this year’s World Series of Poker. He achieved moderate success in side events, winning close to $30 Thousand. Then, he has the eyes of the world upon him as he entered and won the WSOP Main Event on his first attempt.
Cada won $8,5 Million the cherished WSOP Main Event bracelet and the title of ‘youngest player to win the WSOP Main Event.’ No doubt Cada the poker scene will be retelling this young man’s amazing story for years to come.
Yevgeniy “Jovial Gent” Timoshenko:
Don’t let his innocent looks and his demure sounding poker name fool you... Yevgeniy “Jovial Gent” Timoshenko is one of poker scene’s formidable newcomers. In the short space of two and a half years Timoshenko has earned an excess of $4 Million in a combination of live and online tournaments and come face to face with some of the world’s best players.
The Ukrainian born 21 year old form Seattle made his debut into the live poker world with the Irish Open, where he bagged a tournament win and over $100 Thousand. Since then he achieved an Asian Poker Tour victory, a third place finish in the World Series of Poker Europe, first place in the World Championship of Online Poker and a first place finish in the World Poker Tour’s World Championship.
He is now of age in the U.S and is now working to further establish himself in the biggest tournaments in the world.
Ville Walhbeck:
Ville Wahlbech is definitively no newbie to poker (having played his first tournament in 2004), but this year he rose from obscurity winning himself a WSOP bracelet and placing high in a variety of WSOP side events.
The 33 year old from Finland travelled to Vegas, with the intention of ending his career as tournament poker, provided he had another bad run. But his luck changed when he placed third in Event #6 pocketing $150 Thousand in cash.
Wahlbech then went on to win WSOP Event #12, a WSOP bracelet and close to $500 Thousand in prize money. Before the WSOP had concluded, he fetched another 3 high finishes, placing 2nd, 6th and 12th in various other side event winning a total of over $400 Thousand respectively.
He might’ve been under the impression he was close to being done with poker, but evidently poker isn’t close to being done with him.
Cornel Cimpan:
2009 has definitively been kind to Cornel Cimpan. To date his success in tournament poker was limited strictly to small tournaments, where he has achieved modest success. This all changed for him when he won the L.A Poker Classic, where he outmanoeuvred close to 700 players for his first tournament title and a respectable $1.6 Million prize.
A few months later he found himself at the final table of the World Poker Finals, where he again emerged victorios and close to$1 Million richer. This boosts his total earnings for 2009 alone close to $3 Million.
Daniel “djk123” Kelly:
Online players around the world, dread running into Daniel Kelly and a quick look at his online winnings explains why. This fierce 20 year old won two World Championship of Online Poker events in the space of three weeks, an effort that rewarded him with just over $300 Thousand.
His streak of success carried him over to the WCOOP Main Event where he managed a fourth place finish, which earned him a further $643 Thousand. Kelly was named Player of the Series and a sponsorship into a major upcoming event.
When looking at the astounding achievements of these poker players, it becomes clear that you never know for sure who will rise... and who will fall.... in the world of poker.

The R2 Million Challenge started on Sunday night, 29 November 2009, at 19h00. The tournament paused at midnight and resumed the following evening at 19h00, paused again and completed on Tuesday evening. After many hours of gruelling play, ACEE came up trumps, walking away with R1,014,500!
The final hand played out as follows:
ACEE had A spades and 9 hearts and Tinks had pocket 5's Diamonds and Hearts.
Flop: 10 Hearts Ace Hearts 3 Diamonds.
Turn: 3 Hearts
River: 9 Spades
ACEE won the hand with a two pair! With Tinks licking his wounds, being one card short of a flush.

but ACEE has the 9 of hearts, so Tinks was drawing to a 2 outer.
