Razz is an interesting seven card stud poker variant, that can either be played at a land casino, or online. Stud poker means that your opponents get to see some of your cards. In Razz poker you get dealt two cards face down and five cards face up with which you have to make the lowest Razz poker hand, to take the pot. The poker rankings for Razz are quite different from normal poker hand rankings though- so the best poker tip we can offer, is that you familiarize yourself with these before start playing the game. For your convenience, the Razz rankings are listed here below.
The opening bet, called the “ante” is placed, starting with the player on the left of the Dealer. This is done before any cards have been dealt. After this first betting round is complete, the first cards, called the 3rd street are dealt. During the “third street,” you are dealt three cards, two facing down and one face up- visible to all the other players. All cards dealt from here on forward will be placed face up as well.
The player with the highest face up card is then forced to “bring in.” Bring in means you have to open the betting round with a wager at least half the minimum bet. Betting proceeds clockwise, where the players can choose to “call” by matching the minimum bet, “raise” by increasing the betting amount, or simply sitting out of this hand by “folding.”
Should there be more than one player holding the same highest card, the person closest to the dealer’s left will have to bring in. Once the betting round of the third street has finished, the 4th street is dealt. From the 4th street right through to the 7th street onward, the player with the lowest card will be forced to bring in.
When each of the players is holding their fourth card the player with the lowest card is forced to bring in. Once again the players get to call, raise or fold in turn until the betting round is concluded. This sequence is preserved in the same manner, until the 7th street, when all of the remaining players are holding a total of seven cards. The person who made the last bet in the 7th street is forced to show down first.
Players either show down or “muck” their hands in succession. When you “muck” your hand you fold without showing what you were holding. Players who know that they don’t stand a chance of winning this hand and don’t want the others to see what they were holding, have the option to do so. This is generally recommended.
The player holding the lowest Razz hand, takes the pot. Here are the Razz hand rankings:
| 1-10 | 11-20 | 21-30 | 31-40 | | 1) 5432A | 11) 7632A | 21) 8432A | 31) 86532 | | 2) 6432A | 12) 7642A | 22) 8532A | 32) 8654A | | 3) 6532A | 13) 7643A | 23) 8542A | 33) 86542 | | 4) 6542A | 14) 76432 | 24) 85432 | 34) 86543 | | 5) 6543A | 15) 7652A | 25) 8632A | 35) 8732A | | 6) 65432 | 16) 7653A | 26) 8642A | 36) 8742A | | 7) 7432A | 17) 76532 | 27) 8643A | 37) 87432 | | 8) 7532A | 18) 7654A | 28) 86432 | 38) 8752A | | 9) 7542A | 19) 76542 | 29) 8652A | 39) 8753A | | 10) 7543A | 20) 76543 | 30) 8653A | 40) 87532 |
