23-year old Frenchman wins APT Macau

Little over a year after starting to play poker online, 23-year old Frenchmen Adrien Allain has just catapulted onto the live poker scene by winning his first major live poker tournament- the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Macau Main Event. Allain, whose online poker alias is “zlatan35,” outsmarted more than 300 players to walk away with the victory trophy and a hefty sum of $391,556.
The playing field of the APT Macau included some of the biggest names in poker, such as Chino Rheem; Mel Judah; John Juanda; Liz Lieu; James Akenhead; Tony Dunst and many more. Allain eventually landed at the final table with none other than J.C. Tran, one of the most successful professional players who is regarded by many as “the most dangerous tournament player, live and online.”
But Allain, who won his seat to the APT Macau through an online satellite tournament, held it up brilliantly and even sent Tran home in 3rd place, after busting his 2-pair with a straight.
He then went heads-up with Inwook Choi, holding a chip advantage of at least 2:1. Choi finally went All-In with his last chips, holding an Ah-Q against the A-3 of Allain. But against all odds, the board showed 7-2-3-J-J, busting Choi with Allain’s Crabs (3-3)! Choi nevertheless earned $214,158 for his efforts.

Melanie Banfield at the All Africa Poker final table- AGAIN

Piggs Peak Poker regular, Melanie Banfield, made poker history this past weekend, by becoming the only woman who ever made it twice to the final table of the coveted All Africa Poker Tournament, which took place at Piggs Peak Hotel & Casino, Swaziland. Mel finished in a highly respectable 3rd place, which earned her a substantial R450, 000 for her efforts!
Mel’s achievement was no small feat, as she had to outsmart a strong field of 140 players, which comprised the “whose who” of the local poker scene. This included the likes of Ray Rahme; Joe Rahme; Jay Sookoo; Dave Spangenberg; Neville Robbeson; Jaco Storm; Jarred Solomon; Dale Winterstein; Ryan Brauer; Eben Lottering; Dermot Sweeney; David Dadic; Robert Kay; Bennie Lingenfelder; Danny K; defending champion Warren Zackey, and many more.
In what was described as “one of the longest final tables the All Africa Poker Tournament,” the petite Mel held her own brilliantly and even dominated a number of hands. However, when Mel finally went All-In with “Mullets,” (7-7), she was busted by Wessel Jacobs, who held a Big Slick of Diamonds to a board that showed 2-Q-J-A-A.

Ukraine welcomes EPT

. History was made when the European Poker Tour (EPT) made its first stop in Ukraine. The EPT Kyiv was born, as a result of Russia’s recent legislation to discredit poker as a sport, while Ukraine had just classified poker as a non Olympic Sport. Moscow was the intended locale for the new East European EPT stop.
Ukraine rose to the occasion, inaugurating the event with rich local flavour. Kyiv Sport palace, the host for the event has also in the past been the venue for significant events in the Ukraine (namely, the Eurovision Song Contest and the World Cup of Gymnastics).
A total of 129 players entered the event, which is now well into its second day. Local poker enthusiast Mihaylo Demidenko ended the first day as the chip leader and the poker community waits in bated breath to see how this event unfolds.
The Main Event anticipated roundabout 300 players, making it the largest poker event to be held in the Commonwealth of the Independent States (formerly known as the Soviet Republics). This record was previously held by Russia, for hosting 201 players in the Main Event of the Russian Poker Tour.

On the evening of 4 August 2009 history was made at the tables of the R2 Million Challenge Tournament, hosted by Piggs Peak Poker…When the final table consisting of Africa’s most determined online poker talent came to a halt and Africa crowned its biggest online poker millionaire to date.
For more than three hours: “devilishis,” “Jack Spade,” “chutzpah,” “Dipper,” “Rhino,” “tyman2,” “Tucker Time” and “CrazyCrab” competed fiercely, in hopes of claiming the largest share of the R2 Million prize pool and the glory that came with winning ONE MILLION RAND.
One by one the seats were emptied until only “devilishis” and “Jack Spade” remained… Jack Spade went all in pre-flop holding: Kc, 2s. devilishis holding: 10c, As made the call of a lifetime. The board was dealt, revealing: Qs, 10h, Ah, 5s, 6h giving devilishis the winning two pair and a very impressive victory.
