Is Annette Obrestad’s online poker career on the line…??

Replicating the hugely debated recent Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of the US, a Norwegian bill has been passed during the past week, with the objective to restrict payments to Internet gambling sites. This move has even caught the attention of the European Union, who suggested that it has only been done in the state’s interest, protecting the Norway government’s gambling operation, Norske Tipping.
One naturally has to wonder how this will affect the very promising future of Norwegian poker prodigy, Anette Obrestad, who has made history by becoming the youngest ever poker player to win the WSOP Europe, in 2007, at the tender age of 18. Her poker career was kick-started by playing poker online, with the alias Anette_15. After being consistently victorious, she later started to play live tournaments, with equal phenomenal success. But for those of you that are also fans of this formidable little lady of poker, there is fortunately good news…. Norwegian banking officials have made it very clear that even though these laws are now official, they will be practically unenforceable, and just as it was in the United States, it should make hardly any impact at all….

The Second Season of the Asian Pacific Poker Tour has concluded and Australian Martin Rowe has emerged with the tournament title and a $1,000,000 AUS cash prize. Some of the poker scene’s most feared players were amongst the 477-player field. Peter Eastgate, Joe Hachem, Chris Moneymaker and many more were present but none made it to the final table.
Rowe was head’s up against Jason Gray for the tournament title, here’s what happened in the final hand: Rowe called Gray, when he pushed all-in over the top pre-flop. The As, Qc, 5s, flop gave Gray 9h, 5h a pair of fives and Rowe a two pair with his Ac, Qh. The board showed 9s, 3s and Gray had lost. He went home with a consolation prize of $476,000 AUD.

If you’re aspiring to play poker, Martie Faber is one lady you can really take a tip from. This spunky 30-something married mother/independent business owner Martie Faber, is one of the few ladies brave enough to frequently stare down Africa’s most talented poker boys at the poker tables… And oh boy, is she (wo)man enough to give the guys a run for their money! Apart from consistently finishing deep at major local poker tournaments, she will go down in history as the first lady to ever make it to the final table of the prestigious All Africa Poker Tournament, where she accomplished a highly respectable 3rd place finish. This is no small feat, as Martie had to outsmart a strong playing field of more than a hundred players, including some of the most formidable poker legends and celebrities on the African poker scene. And at the time of her achievement, which she calls her “proudest poker moment,” she was only playing poker for around two years!
But how does this feisty lady feel about being one of the few females in what is still very much a pre-dominantly male environment? “Being a woman is actually a huge advantage, as women are easily underestimated and I think that although they won’t admit it, men are more cautious of female players. But most importantly, women don’t have ego. Therefore they don’t go on tilt easily and they won’t risk bullying.”
Does she think that men are better players? Faber argues that men in Africa have a significant upper hand because of their numbers. “There are way more men playing poker, most probably because women in South Africa have yet to shake the shackles of the female stereotypical role in society,” she explains. “As per age-old traditions, they are still mostly the homemakers responsible for raising babies and keeping their families together.” She points out that women fare extremely well internationally though and hopes that in time more local women will cultivate an interest in poker and join the female force in the live poker tournaments
So how did she get into poker? Faber got hooked on poker when she started playing online poker at Piggs Peak Poker around three years ago. Although she loves the excitement and psychology behind playing live, she enjoys the convenience of playing online. “As a mom and business owner with responsibilities I cannot enter live poker tournaments too often. At least when playing online, I get to play a little bit every day. And it sharpens my skills for when I manage to play live.” Her online poker alias….?? “FIELIE.” This originates from her little girl’s sweet nickname “Liefie” which Martie twisted around somewhat…

Joao Barbosa is the latest in line for European Poker Tour titleholder after claiming victory in Warsaw. This triumph is a significant improvement to the 26th place finish the relative newcomer has managed, when he played in a prior EPT Event in Prague.
This is what the final table looked like: Dario Minieri with 359,500 Sergey Shcherbatskiy with 349,000 Nico Behling with 343,500 Ludovic Lacay with 296,500 Arnaud Mattern with 238,000 Atanas Gueorguiev with 186,500 Joao Barbosa with 123,000 Andrea Benelli with 100,000 And Michael Muheim with 89,000
Barbosa went into Heads Up play against Behling with a significant chip lead. The final hand saw Behling (with Js 7s) call Barbosa (who was holding 10h Ah) pre-flop. The board revealed As 7c 3h 6h 6d, which provided Barbosa with the winning two pair. Barbosa went home with a handsome €367,141 reward.
