Created: 12/15/2009 1:29:48 PM

There are just a few days left to earn points for the Bluff Magazine’s Online Player of the Year 2009 title... And at this stage there seems to be little chance left for major changes in the top ranks. There has been some significant movement around the middle ranks though. “daisyxoxo” a.k.a Jeremy Fitzgerald: 439,000 points

“anfo500” a.k.a Michael Rocco: 375,000 points

“inhidonks:” 349,000 points

“Moorman1” Chris Moorman: 306,000 points

“ICuRaRook” a.k.a Jeff Sluzinski: 282,000 points

“ronaldgrauer” a.k.a Ronald Grauer: 269,000 points

“Ericb09” a.k.a Eric Blair: 264,000 points

Online tournaments are still taking place on the international online poker scene. So to determine whether Michael Rocco can close the 118,000 point gap between himself and Jeremy Fitzgerald in time to claim that coveted title...

Are you up for THIS poker challenge?

Created: 11/17/2009 2:12:35 PM

November 10, 2009. Tom “durrrr” Dwan, one of the most feared high stakes online poker players in the world, has just outdone himself by issuing a poker challenge that has never been seen before. Dwan offered to put up a jaw-dropping $1.5 million dollars to a “mere” $500k of any other opponent brave enough to take him on, by playing heads-up at four tables concurrently, for 50,000 hands.

The challenge stipulates that once the last hand has been played, the player who is in the chip lead at that point in time, will win- even if that player leads by a measly $1. Should “durrrr” triumph, he gets to keep the winnings he accumulated during the challenge as well as his competitor’s $500k. Should the other contender win however, he/she will keep his own spoils as well as that jaw-dropping $1.5 million of Dwan.

Whilst the offer is tempting, most online poker players will think twice about taking on Dwan. However, a few pro’s who have rightfully earned the reputation of being formidable themselves, have already decided to face up to it. They are David Benyamine; Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius who formerly managed to beat “durrrr” during a high stakes cash game at the 2009 Aussie Millions. Question is... would YOU have been brave enough to take on THIS poker challenge...??

Nicolas Zakhem cashes in at the 2009 Lebanese Poker Championship

Created: 7/27/2009 1:39:28 PM

It is with great pleasure that the Piggs Peak Poker crew reports that local players are continuing to hold our flag high on international front. Nicholas Zakhem has just finished in a respectable 7th place at the $10,000 Buy-In 2009 Lebanese Poker Championship Main Event, collecting a handsome US$77,000 for his efforts.

This particular event is said to be the largest poker tournament ever held in Lebanon, as it attracted a player field of several hundred, including some of the top dogs such as Joe Hachem and Nenad Medic.
Zakhem sadly went down holding a pair of Cowboys which was busted when Nabil Matta landed Bullets on the turn.

The Piggs Peak crew would like to make use of this opportunity to congratulate Nicolas Zakhem on his brilliant performance. “Go Zakhem! You did us proud!”

Jarred and Ray finish in the money at the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event

Created: 1/23/2009 9:57:43 AM

As expected, Jarred Solomon and Ray Rahme performed brilliantly at the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event. Outsmarting a field of more than 700 players, including some of the most formidable poker pro’s from around the world, both of them finally finished well in the money. Jarred created a record of his own by collecting at two events on the same day! First he was playing at the Aussie Millions Main Event, at a table that included none other than Clonie Gowen, a lady who has 30 money finishes and more than $1million in poker earnings behind her name, as well as Kelly Kim, final tablist of the 2008 World Series of Poker. Jarred held an 8-9 and went all in after flopping a middle pair. He got called by Clonie, who had a J-9. When the board showed a 10 on the turn and then a 7 on the river, Clonie took the pot with the kicker. Jarred was busted in the 63rd position, earning himself a nice enough prize of $15,000. Jarred must have still been hyped up from all the action though, as he immediately headed over to the $5,300 Heads Up Championship, where he finished in an excellent 3rd place and collected another handsome amount of $40,000! At the time, Ray was still playing at the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event. Right after Nhan Le was eliminated in 37th place, the format of the tournament shifted to 6-handed play at six tables. Ray had an Ac-10h, and when the board showed Kh-3c-10d-7h, he checked-raised Christopher Chronis all in. Chronis, who held a Qh-Jh, had several outs though. When he hit an 8h on the river, he completed a flush and sent Ray to the rail in 36th place. For his efforts, Ray earned $30,000, equating to around R200,000!! “Jarred, Ray, the Piggs Peak Poker crew would like to extend warm congratulations to both of you, for your excellent performance. You ROCK!!”

3 Piggs Poker Online Player achieves at All Africa

Created: 6/5/2008 1:02:01 PM

Tongues are wagging about the past All Africa Poker Tournament which took place from the 29th to the 31st of May 2008, at Piggs Peak Swaziland… Apart from the ten WSOP packages that all the players were fiercely competing for and African poker legend and 3 Piggs Poker player Raymond Rahme bagging his first ever AAPT victory… There was another player who grabbed the headlines, with his very own triumph of note.

You certainly don’t need to be a mathematical genius to see that the odds of a R77.00 investment paying off a five figure return in the space of a few months, isn’t very likely. But Allistair Didloff would prove to be an exception to the odds after his recent incredible feat.

Yes, most people would regard winning a seat to the All Africa Poker Tournament valued at R23,000.00 through a satellite tournament at 3 Piggs Poker- at an expense of only R77.00 as an achievement on it’s own already. But Didloff wouldn’t stop there. He played his way through the tough and determined player field at the All Africa Poker Tournament, until he was Head’s Up with Raymond Rahme himself at the final table.

Didloff ended up runners up, winning himself an impressive consolation prize of R400,000.00 and an all expenses paid seat to the upcoming WSOP Main Event to the value of R150,000.00, where he will be joining Team All Africa Poker. So who says online players cannot convert to live tournaments successfully…??

To see how Allistair fares against top international poker professionals at the World Series of Poker, keep your eye on this spot.

The accreditation followed extensive presentations by eCOGRA Chief Executive Andrew Beveridge, the organisation's Independent Directors and audit team to the Commission earlier this year, which delivered credentials and explained the testing methodology used.

Commenting on the accreditation, Beveridge said: “We are delighted that a regulator of the calibre of the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission has accepted our credentials, audit experience and professional qualifications after intensive study. eCOGRA’s professionally qualified specialist team provides the most comprehensive data verification service available to online gambling operators to date.
The service includes:

Wow Mercier!

Created: 4/8/2008 12:34:58 PM

The best way to kick off your live tournament career… is to win one. And Jason Mercier can now say that he is one of the few players, who started his live tournament “career” with a tremendous bang.

Mercier entered the San Remo EPT event (season 4) a complete tournament novice and emerged the winner after outplaying an array of skilled and experienced players, including our very own Ray Rahme. He will be heading home to the US, with his million dollar prize pot and an EPT title.

The final table kicked of with the chip stacks looking as follows:

Dario Minieri (Italy) 1,832,000
Jason Mercier (USA) 1,591,000
Anthony Lellouche (France) 1,192,000
Gregory Genovese (Italy) 694,000
Dag Palovic (Slovakia) 585,000
Eric Koskas (France) 449,000
William Thorson (Sweden) 418,000
Marcus Bower (USA) 278,000

The final table saw some of the quickest action in the tournament’s history, the play lasting just under three hours. This is how the final action went down: Dario started the pot with a 90k raise, and his fellow countryman Genovese moved all in. Nobody expected Mercier to then go all-in as well. Dario did the same but took no further part in the hand when, on the 7-A-5 flop Jason bet out again. Jason had an A-3 for a pair against the T-9 of Gregory, naturally busting Gregory Genovese.

1st Jason Mercier USA €869,000 ($1.36m)
2nd Antony Lellouche France €505,000 ($793k)
3rd Dario Minieri Italy €287,600 ($452k)
4th Erci Koskas France €223,600 ($702k)
5th Gregory Genovese Italy €188,500 ($296k)
6th William Thorson Sweden €140,600 ($221k)
7th Dag Palovic Slovakia €111,800 ($176k)
8th Marcus Bower USA €76,600 ($120k)

Ironically Mercier, a math teacher, was on the verge of backing out of the tournament, because his friends that were supposed to join him, dropped out. Good thing you didn’t follow your friends’ suit then, Mercier… You do the math!

Ray Rahme performs at EPT San Remo

Created: 4/3/2008 9:36:19 AM

Alongside other poker professionals, an array of top online poker players from around the world, including Ray Rahme, gathered to battle it out live for the crown of the EPT, San Remo. This major event, is the last leg of the EPT, before the Grand Final, which is set to take place from 12-17 April 2008- in Monte Carlo.

Our own Ray, outplayed a strong field of 337 of the toughest players that kicked off day 1a, and remained one of the 144 whom will progress to the Main Event, which starts today.

Ray got off to a slow start, with a chip stack that went up and down repeatedly. However, just after the break, Ray clawed back in style, and made a full recovery.

Luca Pagano placed a bet of 1,700, which was re-raised by Raymond by over 3k. An A-4-9 flopped and another 5k came from Raymond, forcing Luca to fold.

On the next hand Raymond made it 4,500 from the button, and got a caller. The flop of 2-Q-J saw Raymond go straight to his chips, thumping all his blues over the line (about 10k) and leaving his opponent no choice but to muck!

Ray will continue to compete against the survivors of Event 1b, which includes the likes of top poker pro Daniel Negreanu, when the EPT Main Event kicks off today. The 3 Piggs Poker Team would like to wish Ray the best of luck, and as for the rest of you, keep your eye on this spot, to see how Ray fares.

Poker - game of chance or skill?

Created: 3/28/2008 2:04:16 PM

The newest and very substantial contribution to the controversial luck versus skill debate in poker, was driven by Michael DeDonno and Douglas Detterman from Case Western Reserve University. Doctoral student Michael, assisted by psychologist Detterman, conducted an extensive study and noted the results in article format, which made even the Gaming Law Review sit up and take notice. “This article provides empirical evidence that poker is a game of skill and not luck,” DeDonno stated.

During the first study, DeDonno used 40 students with no or very little poker knowledge and let them play approximately 200 hands on poker gaming software.

Half were introduced to basic poker strategies and calculation of probabilities, whilst the other half was only briefed on the history of the game, without any of the analytical elements.

The experiment ended with the players who had the strategic background, enjoying the upper hand over their clueless counterparts.

To be absolutely convinced of their findings, they repeated the study, but increased the number of students involved to 700. As the games progressed, all the players got visibly better at the game, but all were still outsmarted by those who knew how to calculate the odds. “If it had been pure luck in winning, then the strategies would not have made any difference between the two groups,” says DeDonno.

It is said that DeDonno & Detterman’s study could very well influence the legal status of the game in future. DeDonno is furthermore convinced that poker simulation can have psychological value with its applications for decision making and risk taking.

Watch out for the Texas Hold’em of Golf

Created: 3/26/2008 4:58:05 PM

What do you get when you combine the skill of golf with the finesse of poker? The Texas Hold’em of Golf of course. And that is exactly what the new 2008 World Series of Golf has been billed!

This upcoming $10,000.00 buy-in golf event, set to take place from 12-15 May, will be played in a format that will see players ante on each tee, or have options to “pass”, “bet” or “fold.” When a player exhausts his tournament money, he will be out of the hole, and eventually out of the tournament! To win the championship, participants will have to outplay all the players in their own groups, and from there move on to compete in the final rounds.

The tourney follows on the success of the inaugural event which took place in 2007. This affair saw poker pro’s such as Phil Ivey, Phil Gordon and Rhett Butler competing in an amateur competition, where the rules were very similar to that of a game of poker. At the time, none of the poker players made it to the finals.

So this year, it looks as if many poker professionals are already gearing up to take on the challenge. Amongst those who signed up by now, is the reigning WSOP player of the year Tom “Donkey Bomber” Schneider. Schneider aspires to combine his own poker know how with skills as seen applied by his personal favorite golfer, Colin “Monty” Montgomery.

We bet this event will spur a whole new debate- which game requires the most skill- poker or golf….?

Phil Ivey Wins LA Poker Classic

Created: 3/7/2008 10:01:22 AM

An interesting mix of the most competitive poker players not to mention a celebrity or two decorated the final tables of the LA Poker Classic, taking place in the Commerce Casino.

Here are some of the highlights of the action that took place:

-This is not a tournament that the poker books will soon forget, seeing as Jennifer Tilly became the highest placed celebrity in the LAPC’s history. She got busted out after coming second best in a match against Phil “Pokerbrat” Hellmuth (she was probably more relieved to escape Hellmuth’s relentless irritating table banter, than she was disappointed to drop out). Tilly got placed 12th and once again caused her share of ruckus amongst the fans.

-Last year’s LAPC was won by native South African Eric Hershler, who bagged a $2.4 Million prize pot for his victory.

Back to this years event, the final tables saw the following players competing for the title:

Phil Ivey 4,100,000
Scott Montgomery 2,680,000
Phil Hellmuth 2,380,000
Charles Moore 1,510,000
Quinn Do 1,450,000
Nam Le 1,180,000

The final tables would see the clash of the two Phils (Hellmuth and Ivey), who would both be competing for their first ever WPT title. After Ivey (who had an incredible chip lead) gave Hellmuth a significant blow to his chip stack, things went downward for the Pokerbrat.

He was eventually knocked out after an all in against Charles Moore with a small stack. Hellmuth was sent home and Ivey went on to win his first career LAPC title after knocking Nam Le, Charles Moore and winning a Heads-Up match against Quinn Do.

John Tabatabai takes down the million!

Created: 3/3/2008 3:18:59 PM

22 year old, John Tabatabai, is the official 12th All Africa Poker Champion and millionaire. He also won a package to the 2008 World Series of Poker. Runner-up, Kyri Patsalos, won a WSOP package and R400,000. Kyri is no newcomer to All Africa Poker and has played in the tournament previously. World Series 3rd place finisher, Ray Rahme also showed some strong poker skills, by once again claiming 3rd position and a WSOP package - perhaps he will win the WSOP this time around.

John's first love was chess, but turned to poker at University. He found that the skills and strategies of chess enhanced his poker game considerably. The All Africa Poker Tournament is the first major event that John has won, having finished second in the World Series of Poker Europe.

Darren Kramer crowned the KING

Created: 2/14/2008 4:11:54 PM

This weekend 3 Piggs Poker once again proved that our players are top notch. Five 3 Piggs Poker players took their seats at the final table of the SA Poker Open held at Monte Casino this past weekend - 10th February 2008.

Anton Bertilsson kicked off the final table as the chip leader, but it was 3 Piggs Poker?s - Darren Kramer who came from the middle of the pack to claim the top honours and win the tournament proving to the local and international poker community that SA poker is a force to be reckoned with.

Anton Bertilsson went from chip leader to being knocked out of the tournament in 8th place after going All-in preflop, holding Q 2 suited against Chris Convery?s Jay Birds, earning himself a sum of +- R116K. Berrny Lengenfelder was next to fall when he lost a race with A-10 against Grant Nelson's pocket nines. Lengenfelder picked up a straight draw on the turn when the board read 5c 8c Jd 9c, but the 5d on the river gave Nelson a full house and sent Lengenfelder home in seventh place (approx a modest R140K).

Nelson?s short lived luck ran out when he was placed sixth after moving in preflop Kc Jh, and Michael called him with 10d 10c, the cards were dealt to no avail and brought Nelson?s SA Poker Open to an end. Convery claimed another victim, this time sending Danny K packing ? Danny did not go home empty handed, earning himself R200K for a weekend?s play, not too shabby if you ask me!

Poker legend Chris Convery was not holding back, knocking out yet another player, this time one of Poker?s favourite daughters ? namely Melanie Banfield. Convery forced Melanie All-in holding Kd 10c ? Melanie showed her cards, packing Qc Jh. The flop fell to the felt, exposing Qs Ks Ad, unfortunately Melanie could not pick up the 10, on the turn the 3rd king was placed and the river revealed a deuce handing Convery a 3 of a kind Kings and knocking Melanie out in 4th place. Melanie took home a well deserved R268K. Michael Holm was busted out in third place (+-R470K) by Darren Kramer to set up heads-up play. Holm pushed his last few chips in the middle with J-5, and Kramer called with K-Q. The board ran out 7s 4c 10s 9s 9d, and Holm headed to the rail.

The pressure was definitively piled on Kramer who went heads up against Convery who had double his stack. But Darren Kramer proved that anything can happen in poker, doubling through Convery a couple of times to nab the chip lead. The final hand was a roller coaster, with Convery moving all in preflop with 10c 6s, and Kramer making the call with 4s 4h. Convery picked up a pair on the 5h Qs 6h flop, and Kramer found a straight draw on the 7c turn. The 8d on the river was the dagger to Convery, as Darren Kramer picked up a straight to take down the SA Poker Open and R1,085,239.00 first-place prize money. Convery won R739,776.72 for his second-place finish.

Created: 1/29/2008 3:22:34 PM

Recent observations conducted in European countries have revealed that your nationality has a reflective effect on your online poker play.

Here are some of the most prominent national poker tells that have been found to occur:

Newcomers to the online poker scene (and poker scene in general), the Spanish- play an intensely analytical game. This derives from the fact that a huge portion of the new poker enthusiasts have a chess back-ground that has in turn rubbed off on their poker play. It’s for this reason that it’s no surprise that they’re becoming one of the strongest poker players in Europe.

Also known for an overtly methodical play, the Germans apparently don’t bat an eyelid playing against professionals –who they are willing to lose money to in order to improve their own skills.

True to the “victorianesque conservative” nature the English are known for… U.K. players are known for a distinctly vigilant and conventional style. This lack of willing to take a risk also seems to be the nation’s most characteristic weakness.

Another country, who remains loyal to their typecast is the French, who, like their rugby team, play with the spirit, panache and flair very becoming of the flamboyant nation. While this style, on its good days has the tendency of being extremely fruitful, can in turn also generate significant losses.

The Italians however, are some of the most formidable players to face online. This is owing to their extremely aggressive and unpredictable style. It seems that they love the action of the game and promise a very interesting game.

The broader field of Dutch players are educated and young. They are reputed for being careful and detached in their play.

Sweden, in an unusual twist, completely defies their nature in their brand of poker play. The Swedes, who are known to be a very serene and composed, contradict their natures in their play. The Swedish players are aggressive and take risks…

No observations have been published to date on the style of African or South African players. And, obviously no two poker players are the same… But you can’t help but wonder whether your nationality has left a predictable stain on your play…. What do you think..?

Playing poker enhances your sport

Created: 1/29/2008 1:42:33 PM

Australian cricketer Shane Warne recently rocked the sports world, when he announced that he will pass up on playing the Twenty20 Series later this year. He stated that he prefers to try his luck at a different sport- playing poker at the World Series of Poker 2008!

Interestingly enough, Warne is not the only cricket star, that has developed a penchant for “the game of the sophisticated”. Using terms that can only originate from a thorough understanding of poker, former Australian captain Ian Chappell was recently quoted saying:
“As the gambler says, “You've got to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em'.” However, Chappell was not referring to a game of Texas Holdem at all, but was making an appeal to the Indian cricket selectors to not omit Virender Sehwag form the probables for the next tour.

And it is reported that this poker principle refers directly to Sehwag’s style of playing. Sehwag is known to spend time in the middle, and ensures that the lead is constantly enhanced. He bats out time, but does not ignore the importance of batting for runs. Just when everyone seems to think that he is too close to the border of being reckless, he reigns himself in again. And as soon as is looking like a stone-waller, he lets loose. Considering this, it becomes clear that Sehwag definitely knows when to Holdem and when to foldem..

Another sports star that applies poker principles to enhance his game, is the tennis star Andy Roddick. A self proclaimed poker fanatic, he says that he has been practising his poker face, to assist in masking his emotions on the tennis court as well. He also claims that many other international tennis players, including his mentor Jimmy Connors, shares his passion for the game of poker.

The list of sports stars that have taken to the betting sports, is too long to mention here. But one thing that is undeniable, is that apart from being the latest hip thing to do, poker and any competitive sports has one very similar objective in mind: to strategically analyze probabilities, and to improvise in any unpredictable scenario –to emerge with the better hand..

Which is sort of how we’re supposed to approach life on all other levels as well, isn’t it…? So all you poker junkies out there, poker is not just another obsession. It can enhance your performance at sports, or improve your skills at the game of life!

Calculating Poker odds ? As easy as one, two three!

Created: 1/21/2008 9:18:49 AM

It is fundamental to be able to calculate poker odds in order to play online poker. It gives you quite an insight into whether you are in a good or bad situation. It therefore allows players to make more money from their game than before. Many people who try doing calculations by themselves realize that it isn't as easy as it made out to be in books. The reason for this is that when you read books, you have time to analyze and reflect on what you have read. On the other hand, in Poker you don't have the luxury of time. Odds have to be calculated correctly in real time to win. Calculating the exact odds in the middle of a Poker Game is a trademark of only the ?advanced? poker players. The situation gets even more complex when you are playing multi-tables.

One solution to the problem is to learn and remember the odds for common situations and draws. This includes learning start hands, number of outs in a straight draw, the probability of getting two-pair if you have a bottom pair and so on. This can be especially helpful if you are new to the game however, if you are chasing big money you will need to go further than this. You have to be ready to deal with all kinks of situations occurring at the poker table. Making smart decisions swiftly is the key to victory: such as when to raise and fold? All of these decisions are based on calculations.

Every one knows that if you have a drawing hand, it is important to figure out the pot odds before you make a call. What that means is, are the odds of you making the hand and winning the pot greater than the amount you had to call relative to the pot? Well there is a rule of thumb that will get you the correct odds within a percent or two and takes only seconds to learn and remember.

The first thing that you do is count up the number of outs that you have. Then the percent chance that the next card will be one of your outs is your number of outs multiplied by two. Say you are drawing to a spade flush. There are two spades on the board, two in your hand, which leaves nine remaining in the deck. Multiply 9 * 2 = 18 percent that the next card will be a spade.

Let's study this a little more closely. After the flop there are 47 unknown cards left in the deck, after the turn there are 46 which means that the odds of any given card being the next one to come out are:
1/47 = 2.1 %
1/46 = 2.2 %

If we approximate this as 1 in 50 instead of 1 in 47 we see that any given card has a 2% chance of coming out. Which means to find the chance that one of our outs is next we simply multiply it by two. To find the chance that one of our outs comes on the turn or the river multiply it by four.

It is important to note that these are underestimates. i.e. this rule of thumb would approximate the chances of your flush coming to be 36 % instead of 38%. If you would like to be more exact, multiply by 2 or 4 and add 1 percent for every 8 chances you have of hitting your out. So in this case we would add 2% because we have 9 chances on the turn and 9 chances on the river for 18 chances total.

However, if you get it wrong or in an untimely manner, you are going to be eaten. Getting it right can help you decide when to play it loose and tight.

Raymond Rahme making name for himself in the Aussie Millions…

Created: 1/16/2008 4:29:59 PM

One of our local icons, as well as our frequent players here on 3 Piggs Poker, Raymond Rahme is holding his head up at the Aussie Millions tournament. Initially he had a few setbacks after receiving a few knocks in the main event (Day 1a), after emerging on the wrong side of a show off against J.J. Lui.

Though at the end of the day, he landed himself in amongst the top fifteen chip leaders for the day. Rahme is still hanging in there and doing us proud! We’re all holding thumbs to see him in the final tables.

He is entering day 2 with a stack of 79 000, while another local, Ryan Eber hangs in with 16 700 in chips.

Come on boys - go for it!

Shane Warne, legendary legspinner, now turned poker pro was penalised for using his mobile phone to send a test message will playing at the Aussie Millions 2008 at the Crown Casino in Melbourne. Reportedly he was given a 5 minute penalty for using his phone.

Warne has just signed up with an internet poker room to play poker around the world and wil lbe participating later this year at the WSOP 2008!

Warne had the following to say about his new career: "Its' a game of skill. You have to be disciplined." Rather ironic if you consider his history as a cricket player.

We are watching his progress closely and will report anything of interest.

Bluffing

Created: 1/16/2008 10:09:56 AM

Bluffing is an important skill in the game of poker. It is what makes poker exciting and challenging at the same time. After all, what fun would it be if the best hand always won and if we could predict what the other players were holding?

To be a profitable player, a balance is needed between bluffing when the time is right and bluffing for the sake of just bluffing. That is why it is important to know how and when to bluff, or your stack could be reduced to nothing before the first blind level is over.

There are two kinds of Bluffs, namely the ?Pure Bluff? and the ?Semi Bluff?. The pure bluff is when a player bets or raises with a bad hand that has an outside to no chance of improving. The semi bluff occurs when a player bets on a hand that has a chance of improving as the hand progresses.

One of the biggest mistakes made by poker players is that they often think that they need to bluff after a certain number hands regardless of what he/she has or what the other players appear to have. When bluffing is used correctly and wisely it is an asset, but it could also prove to be a costly part of poker if you do not pay attention to the other players and if you do not pick the right time to bluff.

Even though bluffing is an essential skill to learn, you will not be measured on how you bluff but on how often it works.

Here are some best times to bluff:
1You are in the late position and no one before you is indicating that they a strong hand
2)Your table image of a rock and only calls on good hands
3)You are facing only one opponent
4)You sense the other players are weak and will fold if you raise or bet.

Here are some worst times to bluff:
1)When the player that is still left in the hand is the kind that never folds
2)When there are still a lot of players left in the hand
3)When a player has invested too much money in the pot that they will not fold to your raise or bet

I hope that you find the above helpful and that you will be bluffing your way up the poker rankings in no time.

Poker triumphs over cricket!

Created: 1/11/2008 7:43:01 AM

Shane Warne, one of the best leg spinners in the world, committed to play cricket for Hampshire, but believe it or not would rather be playing poker in Las Vegas than play in his club's Twenty20 campaign later this year.

Warne, who writes a column for "The Times" in Australia, wrote: "Now that I am retired from international cricket - in fact all cricket in Australia - I am gradually moving into other areas. There is a deal in the pipeline with a poker company that will involve playing in certain events through the year."

Warne, who is no newcomer to poker, played at the Aussie Millions in 2007, where Ryan "FBT" Brauer, a 3 Piggs Poker player, clinched 30th position. 3 Piggs Poker was also represented at the Aussie Millions 2007 by 3 Piggs Poker Manager, Sandy Koor and Joe "Soprano" Rhame.

Warne, 38, who has been in cricket for about 20 years says that he needs a rest at some point during a 6 month campaign. He has not played Twenty20 for the past few seasons and would rather go to the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, which is taking place at the same time as the Twenty20 Cup.

The World Series of Poker Main Event Title is the most prestigious and most sought after poker title in the world. Ray Rahme, another player with 3 Piggs Poker, achieved 3rd position at the 2007 WSOP, becoming the first Southern African Poker Player to achieve such a feat!

It will be interesting to see how well Warne does in Las Vegas and he may just find himself at a table with a 3 Piggs Poker player or two.

Online Poker vs. Live Poker

Created: 1/4/2008 10:43:19 AM

For decades, poker has been played in, casinos, pubs and homes across the world within a group of people all looking to outwit their opponents by trying to pick up tells on each other to give themselves an advantage. However, over the last few years there has been a new breed of poker joining the poker world, which is the ever so popular online poker game.

Many poker players enjoy playing poker online because of how easy it is to find a good game without needing to leave the comfort of your own home. You can play at almost any stakes you want to suit your bankroll, and you can always find action at your desired game and limit no matter what time of the day. Furthermore, the game speed is much faster online than it is at a live table, as the cards are dealt electronically and there is no need for a dealer to manually shuffle and deal the cards in between hands.

So far it sounds like online poker has a lot to offer when compared to live poker, but what does live poker have over the online game? Well the one undeniable advantage that live poker has is that you have the chance to sit down face to face with other players for a real poker playing experience. It is great fun playing online, but there is nothing can replace the thrill of battling against opponents in a live arena and experiencing the excitement of the game first hand.

So which version is better, live or online? In my opinion they both have their pros and cons, so I don?t think it?s fair to say that one is completely better than another. Some players will comfortably say that live is the best because there is no substitute for playing against real people, but this is more just a matter of opinion. On the ?flop? side, there is no substitute for the simplicity and ease of use of online poker, and you will never find as many tables or limits on offer in a casino as you would in online poker. I believe that every player should try and get a healthy mix of online poker as well as live poker, and use this mix to improve their overall game.

If you are exclusively an online player, it is well worth your while giving live poker a shot, because you will certainly find it to be a very exciting experience. Similarly, if you are purely a live player, you should sign up for an online account and give online poker a try, you may find it more fun than you think. All in all, it is good to keep a bit of diversity in your game and play in both the live and online formats of the game. But whatever you choose to do, just make sure you?re having a good time playing poker, as that?s what poker is all about at the end of the day.

Be Aggressive and take control of the Heads-Up situation.

Created: 1/4/2008 10:33:08 AM

Heads-Up Poker is the pinnacle to every single game of Holdem, if you are going to win you will always face a heads up situation. Heads up poker is where you play head to head against a single opponent and whether you start off with two players in the game or two thousand, the result is always the same - a duel between the final two players.

If you start with a high number of players, or indeed any number of players bigger than two, the game will lose one of them at a time as they run out of chips until you are left with the final pairing - the heads-up. Now playing Heads-Up is different from the rest of the tournament and requires a different approach in order to be successful.

Nowhere is the contrast more stark than in online Holdem poker play and if you've never made it to the final of a Hold ?em tournament you are in for a rollercoaster ride when you do!

The pace is extremely fast and furious with little or no time to think, you are relying mostly on your experience and quick thinking to pull you through. But the number one strategy you need to adopt when playing heads-up poker online is to be aggressive. It is a ruthless winner-takes-all situation and if you don't show enough determination, strength and aggression, your opponent will most certainly take advantage of the situation and take charge of the game ? prepare yourself for an onslaught.

You need to call almost every hand, after all you're paying for the blinds so if you don't call it your opponent gets to keep the blinds for free. Remember that when it gets to this stage, the blinds are at their highest so every hand is important to win. You can?t afford to let one go for free unless you feel you have absolutely no chance of winning the hand.

Of course a Holdem hand that you would probably fold in a ten player situation is often one that you can go all-in with at heads-up poker. Any Ace at all is certainly worth raising and re-raising, the chances are your opponent is adopting a similar strategy to you and he may be going in with a King or Queen along with a lower card.

Say for example you are dealt King-Eight. Now at a ten player poker tournament you would most probably fold this hand in early position, but call or possibly even raise in late position. In a heads-up situation you would be perfectly entitled to go all-in with a reasonable expectation of winning the hand if it got played out.

Vary your play and if you find yourself in front in chips, be even more aggressive! Don?t be afraid to put in a big raise with no hand, your opponent will most likely back down unless he has a big hand.

The bottom line is this for heads-up poker - attack or be attacked!

A night to remember!!

Created: 12/21/2007 2:24:04 PM

On Thursday, 13th December 2007, 3 Piggs Poker, Piggs Peak Casino and Volcanic Gold got together to throw a truly memorable end of year bash for our top end players.

Picture a scene from the roaring 20?s?The World Renowned Rovos Rail ? the most luxurious train in the world, gleaming with old world grandeur as a backdrop to welcome drinks and hors d?ouevres.

Guests soon got into the swing of things when they chose their accessories. There was a selection of feather boas, beads, bracelets, hair pins, cigarette holders and elegant beaded headbands, as well as some personal attention from a make up artist for the ladies. The gentlemen chose their hats, waistbands, bow ties and cigars, all the while being serenaded by some jazzy numbers by the violinist.

After donning our feathers and finery, we boarded the Rovos Rail. Amid the traditional furnishings and period d?cor, we were whisked away by the grande dame of steam travel for our 3 hour trip of Pretoria and surrounds. Dinner was a lavish 5 course silver service affair, and guests were entertained by Conrad Koch, a pupper master, raconteur and all round good fella.

Guests were free to explore the luxurious suites aboard the train, and strangers soon became friends over whiskeys, fine Cigars and Cognac in the lounge cars.

After a truly memorable experience, we arrived back at our station where we disembarked. Guests were presented with Sepia photographs of themselves and their partners in front of the Rovos Rail, as a memento of a magical evening, and their gift boxes from 3 Piggs Poker, Piggs Peak and Volcanic Gold.

We hope that you?ll join us next time round.

APPT Sydney 2007 - Day 1 Flight 1 update

Created: 12/13/2007 2:43:15 PM

Levy's run of good cards seemed to have stood him in good stead - as he took down another fantastic pot with a full house of sevens full of eights!

Luigi A'Preda took the lead into the 10th Level (600/1200 with a 200 ante) with approximately 250,000 chips, with Grant Levy and Terrence Chan closely chasing him.

Terrance's chase paid off going into the 11th level (800/1600 with a 200 ante), when he took the lead from A'Preda. Chan, in relief in getting away from a hand that could have hurt his stack, jokingly remarked: "I've won every tournament I've ever played in Australia" He was referring to his short handed victory at his only appearance in the APPT Sydney Preliminary events.

With only 30 players remaining, Day 1 Flight 1, had claimed several feature players including World Champions Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer. Raymond Rahme, who held the chip lead for the greater part of the day was eliminated on pocket rockets on the "heaviest" table in the venue, where 4 of the chip leaders battled for a number of blind levels.

Aces come back to haunt Rahme - APPT Sydney 2007

Created: 12/13/2007 2:28:17 PM

After winning a fantastic pot with aces earlier in the day, the bullets came back to haunt Rahme!

Rahme, who was chip leader for a considerable part of the day, was holding pocket Aces - but they were unfortunately not enough to hold up to Grant Levy's set of Queens.

This propelled Levy to the chip lead of more than 200,000.

Hi Vanessa, Vicky.....

Just wanted to say thanks for another well run weekend. Really enjoyed it. Well done to Ryan on running the tournament so smoothly and also hope Sandy gets well soon! One comment.... I know we all have very different preferences but I think the 2nd chance tournament was way way way better when it was a 20 seater. Didn't seem like a ton of interest in cash games on Saturday but quite a few people would have been keen for more 2nd chance sats.
