Poker - game of chance or skill?

The newest and very substantial contribution to the controversial luck versus skill debate in poker, was driven by Michael DeDonno and Douglas Detterman from Case Western Reserve University. Doctoral student Michael, assisted by psychologist Detterman, conducted an extensive study and noted the results in article format, which made even the Gaming Law Review sit up and take notice. “This article provides empirical evidence that poker is a game of skill and not luck,” DeDonno stated.
During the first study, DeDonno used 40 students with no or very little poker knowledge and let them play approximately 200 hands on poker gaming software.
Half were introduced to basic poker strategies and calculation of probabilities, whilst the other half was only briefed on the history of the game, without any of the analytical elements.
The experiment ended with the players who had the strategic background, enjoying the upper hand over their clueless counterparts.
To be absolutely convinced of their findings, they repeated the study, but increased the number of students involved to 700. As the games progressed, all the players got visibly better at the game, but all were still outsmarted by those who knew how to calculate the odds. “If it had been pure luck in winning, then the strategies would not have made any difference between the two groups,” says DeDonno.
It is said that DeDonno & Detterman’s study could very well influence the legal status of the game in future. DeDonno is furthermore convinced that poker simulation can have psychological value with its applications for decision making and risk taking.

Watch out for the Texas Hold’em of Golf

What do you get when you combine the skill of golf with the finesse of poker? The Texas Hold’em of Golf of course. And that is exactly what the new 2008 World Series of Golf has been billed!
This upcoming $10,000.00 buy-in golf event, set to take place from 12-15 May, will be played in a format that will see players ante on each tee, or have options to “pass”, “bet” or “fold.” When a player exhausts his tournament money, he will be out of the hole, and eventually out of the tournament! To win the championship, participants will have to outplay all the players in their own groups, and from there move on to compete in the final rounds.
The tourney follows on the success of the inaugural event which took place in 2007. This affair saw poker pro’s such as Phil Ivey, Phil Gordon and Rhett Butler competing in an amateur competition, where the rules were very similar to that of a game of poker. At the time, none of the poker players made it to the finals.
So this year, it looks as if many poker professionals are already gearing up to take on the challenge. Amongst those who signed up by now, is the reigning WSOP player of the year Tom “Donkey Bomber” Schneider. Schneider aspires to combine his own poker know how with skills as seen applied by his personal favorite golfer, Colin “Monty” Montgomery.
We bet this event will spur a whole new debate- which game requires the most skill- poker or golf….?

Hi there
I am the lucky fellow who won the bad beat jackpot last night. 1st of all I'd like to thank 3piggs poker for such an enjoyable year i have spent now playing on their site, I have grown friendly with many players from the South African poker community and it has truly been a wonderful experience. I hope the community continues to grow as tremendously as it has thus far, and I'm sure I will spend a lot more time playing on 3piggs. Once again thanks very much for such a great time!

Phil Ivey Wins LA Poker Classic

An interesting mix of the most competitive poker players not to mention a celebrity or two decorated the final tables of the LA Poker Classic, taking place in the Commerce Casino.
Here are some of the highlights of the action that took place:
-This is not a tournament that the poker books will soon forget, seeing as Jennifer Tilly became the highest placed celebrity in the LAPC’s history. She got busted out after coming second best in a match against Phil “Pokerbrat” Hellmuth (she was probably more relieved to escape Hellmuth’s relentless irritating table banter, than she was disappointed to drop out). Tilly got placed 12th and once again caused her share of ruckus amongst the fans.
-Last year’s LAPC was won by native South African Eric Hershler, who bagged a $2.4 Million prize pot for his victory.
Back to this years event, the final tables saw the following players competing for the title:
Phil Ivey 4,100,000
Scott Montgomery 2,680,000
Phil Hellmuth 2,380,000
Charles Moore 1,510,000
Quinn Do 1,450,000
Nam Le 1,180,000
The final tables would see the clash of the two Phils (Hellmuth and Ivey), who would both be competing for their first ever WPT title. After Ivey (who had an incredible chip lead) gave Hellmuth a significant blow to his chip stack, things went downward for the Pokerbrat.
He was eventually knocked out after an all in against Charles Moore with a small stack. Hellmuth was sent home and Ivey went on to win his first career LAPC title after knocking Nam Le, Charles Moore and winning a Heads-Up match against Quinn Do.

22 year old, John Tabatabai, is the official 12th All Africa Poker Champion and millionaire. He also won a package to the 2008 World Series of Poker. Runner-up, Kyri Patsalos, won a WSOP package and R400,000. Kyri is no newcomer to All Africa Poker and has played in the tournament previously. World Series 3rd place finisher, Ray Rahme also showed some strong poker skills, by once again claiming 3rd position and a WSOP package - perhaps he will win the WSOP this time around.
John's first love was chess, but turned to poker at University. He found that the skills and strategies of chess enhanced his poker game considerably. The All Africa Poker Tournament is the first major event that John has won, having finished second in the World Series of Poker Europe.
