No need to be loaded to get loaded

7 Fortunate players at Piggs Peak Poker got loaded big time with cash payouts of just over a quarter of a million rand when the Bad Beat Jackpot was triggered at R1.00/R2.00 Table Reloaded on Sunday afternoon, the 27th of September 2009. This is how the action went down...

unicorn47, who held an Ad-Jd had the Dealer Button and galvanize posted the small blind of R1.00, holding a 5c-4s. Reezo posted the big blind of R2.00, holding Jc-6h, but when SMJ raised the stakes to R8.00, (holding pocket tens); martian; OMG Jayswan; PoT_HeaD and spyker folded. Unicorn47 stuck to his guns can called, but galvanize and Reezo also folded, leaving SMJ and unicorn47 to go heads-up.

The flop brought 10d-Qd-3d. SMJ who now had trip tens, raised R18.00 and unicorn47 called. The turn showed a Kd and SMJ, went all in for R17.82 while unicorn47 followed suit. When the river showed a 10c, SMJ must have thought he had the nuts, holding quad tens. But great was his surprise when unicorn47 showed down a straight flush and took the pot!

Fortunately for SMJ that nasty bad beat feeling did not last long, as this hand triggered the Bad Beat Jackpot. And not only did all the players who formed part of the hand receive a handsome cash reward, but SMJ who suffered the Bad Beat- received a jaw-dropping cash prize of R126,057.73!!

This is how the rest of the Bad Beat Jackpot was split:

galvanize,won a Bad Beat Amount of R10504.81

Reezo,won a Bad Beat Amount of R10504.81

martian,won a Bad Beat Amount of R10504.81

OMG_Jayswan,won a Bad Beat Amount of R10504.81

There's a special name for an ace-high straight flush, it's called a royal flush ;)

SMJ was beat on the flop. When the turn card was another diamond, what hands could he beat? But he still went all-in. Maybe if SMJ pushed all-in on the river it could be considered a bad beat.

The next best thing to playing poker

Created: 9/16/2009 11:43:06 AM

Statistics show that one of the fastest growing and most popular online activities amongst poker players is… to tweet on Twitter! And not only has it become the next best thing to playing poker for poker junkies, but it has also become a convenient means through which poker fans can stay in touch with what’s happening in the world of poker. But what exactly does it mean to “tweet” on Twitter…??

Well, simply put Twitter can be regarded as the “SMS-Service of the Internet.” It is a free social networking facility which allows users to create a profile or account from where text-based messages called “tweets” can be sent or received. People that subscribe to a user’s account, for the sake of staying in touch with that person, are called “followers.” A user could opt to only communicate with pre-selected “followers,” or to make the posts available to everyone.

Most importantly, Twitter has become one of the easiest and quickest ways to keep tabs on what is happening right now…. And this fact has now also been discovered by poker players across the globe. In fact, well-known poker journalist Brad Willis recently said: “Twitter has given the players an immediate voice. Two years ago, by the time a player did an interview about his play, he would've had hours to think about it, calm down, and think rationally. Now, anybody can be inside the players’ heads as they play and experience the moment almost as it happens.”

An article by “Dr. Pauly” McGuire, exploring this new phenomenon has also recently been published. Here are some of his observations….

Doyle Brunson, “The Grandfather of Poker” has been actively blogging about his poker exploits and sharing poker wisdom on Twitter. Commended for embracing new technology, even though he is of the older generation, it has been noted that he is “like a kid in a candy store” about it.

Twitter has given people new insight into some of the poker pro’s profiles. Barry Greenstein for example, who is regarded as a “quiet” player, has been chirping away on Twitter, showing a lighter, witty side of himself.

Like many other celebrities, some poker professionals have been using Twitter as a PR- & marketing tool. This includes the likes of Phil Ivey, who even has a dedicated person who updates his Twitter account for him.

Many poker players enjoy sharing all the mundane details of their lives on Twitter too. Annie Duke takes pics of her food and pastes it on Twitter. Joe Sebok “tweets” everyone when he listens to his favourite band and Annette Obrestad made it public when her kitten fell in the loo.

Tweeting can also get poker players in hot water, as was experienced by none other than “Kid Poker” Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu made the mistake of calling a fellow player a “whackjob surprise” on Twitter, just to find out that she is the wife of 2007 WSOP Player of the Year, Tom Schneider! Needless to say he had to apologise and retract his comments.

Whether you have caught on this new trend or not, Twitter is no doubt here to stay. In fact, earlier this year Twitter ranked amongst the top 50 visited websites in the world. So… if you are wondering what some of the other poker players are up to…. You’re most likely to find them tweeting about it on Twitter!

Created: 9/8/2009 10:41:08 AM

7 September 2009. Day 1a of the $10,300 Buy-In World Poker Tour (WPT) Merit Cyprus Classic has attracted a strong playing field of 91 players, including the likes of previous All Africa Poker Tournament winner John Tabatabai; Huck Seed; John Monnette and even Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari. Heads rolled from the word go and notable busts that occurred already included that of the formidable Italian high stakes player and 4 times WSOP bracelet holder Jeffrey Lisandro AKA “Iceman.”

No doubt one of the strong contenders for this prestigious title, would be Esfandiari, who made poker history by becoming the youngest poker professional ever to win a WPT Championship in 2004. To date, Esfandiari has earned close to $3,000,000 through poker; had three first place finishes at major poker tournaments; and even sports a WSOP Bracelet.

The WPT Merit Cyprus will be flighted in 2 starting days. There are now 63 players left from Day 1a and Day 1b will commence later today. To find out who finally wins this coveted poker tournament, keep your eye on this spot.
