Southern Africa's prime poker players improve at the WSOP 2010

Created: 7/13/2010 6:29:59 PM

As the WSOP main event continues into Day 4 Southern Africa's top poker players continue to make a name for themselves as they show off their skills and knowledge to the rest of the poker players from around the World.

Jarred Solomon did extremely well in Event #26. In the $2500, 6 handed No Limit Hold'em Tournament, he finished 5th after playing against over 1000 players. Jarred continued on a good run where he then played in Event #44, $2500 mixed Hold'em Tournament and once again made the money by placing 6th. Unfortunately Jarred's WSOP main event came to an end after being knocked out in Day 3.

Sandy Koor ran out of luck once again. Before the main event Sandy entered a side event. In one big hand Sandy picked up pocket Aces. Another opponent raised with pocket Nines and Sandy flat called. Both players hit their set on the flop and found themselves All In. As they turned over their cards Sandy was happy to see himself ahead with the higher set until a one outer came on the turn, another 9 giving the other player 4 of a kind.

In the Main Event Sandy made it through to Day 3. Sandy raised with Ace King and got a call from another player holding Ace Jack. As an Ace came on the flop Sandy pushed All In. His opponent called and once again Sandy was ahead. The turn came and nothing had changed, only until the river where a Jack fell, which knocked Sandy out the Tournament.

Two time winner of the All Africa Poker Tournament Darren Kramer goes on another good run as he makes it through to Day 3 of the Bellagio Main Event.

Greg Ronaldson is flying high and is bringing out his best poker skills once again. Greg moves into Day 4 of the WSOP Main Event sitting with a chip stack of 281 000.

Good Luck to the players that are still in the Tournament and well done to those who have placed in all the other side events.

Jarred Solomon exits in 5th place

Created: 6/17/2010 4:32:44 PM

Jarred Solomon is eliminated from the $2500, 6 handed , no limit holdem poker tournament. Jarred picked up King Ten of spades on the button and moved All In.

Joe Baldwin sitting in the Big Blind position made the call with Ace Queen off suit. The flop came down, Ace (s) Jack (h) Six (h) giving Solomon a gut shot straight draw. Only a Queen or running Kings and Tens would help Jarred stay in the tournament.

A four (h) came on the turn and 2 (h) on the river. Solomon missed everything and Baldwin makes a flush, knocking out Jarred in 5th position.

After all the hard work Jarred's tournament comes to an end and he receives $110,000 for his efforts.
Well done Jarred, what a great performance.

On the turn a Jack fell and Papola checked again. Solomon came out betting again and Papola mucks his cards.
Solomon moves to 1,8 million chips and moves to 3rd place.

William Haydon remains the chipleader with Joe Baldwin coming second.

Joe Baldwin is not too far behind him with 2,175,000 chips and Jeffrey Papola coming 3rd. Jarred seems to have taken a knock and moves from 2nd position to 4th.

Blinds are at 30 000/60 000 with a 5000 ante.

Moon or Cada? Who will be the 2009 World Poker Champion?

Created: 11/9/2009 8:27:22 AM

9 November 2009. There are only 2 players standing at the 2009 Word Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, Darvin Moon and Joe Cada, who are both complete newcomers on the poker scene. And although Cada will be going into final heads-up play, anything is possible and the jury is still out as to who will finally be crowned as the World Poker Champion for 2009.

Moon is a normal run of the mill kind of guy who owns a logging business. But he was instantly catapulted into poker stardom this year when he managed to reach the final table of the WSOP Main Event.

Cada’s rise to the top of the poker world is also short of miraculous as his only other significant cash was at one of the side events of the 2009 WSOP itself. Should he manage to win, he will beat Phil Hellmuth’s new record for being the youngest ever poker player to win a World Series of Poker Main Event.

To find out which one of these newbies finally claims the victory, keep your eye on the spot.

Robert Kay takes home $100,230 at WSOP 2009

Created: 7/3/2009 8:58:47 AM

Well done Robert Kay!

He took home $100,230 in the $5,000 6 handed NL Holdem event at the WSOP 2009. He finished in 7th position, doing us all very proud!

Here is how he was eliminated:

Matt Hawrilenko raised under the gun to 105,000 chips. Faraz Jaka made the call - Robert then called all-in for 1,333,000 chips! Hawrilenko, who had 1,333,000 left, called Robert. Jaka folded.

Robert showed K hearts Q diamonds, while Hawrilenko showed A hearts and K Clubs.

The board:

2 diamonds, 3 clubs, K spades, 10 hearts and J spades

Robert had the following to say on his way out: "Nothing I could do, I call and see the flop we get it in anyways."

We are all proud of you Robert - well played!

Robert Kay stuns with his poker brilliance!

Created: 7/2/2009 1:54:31 PM

Piggs Peak Poker's very own Robert Kay is kicking some serious butt in the WSOP $5,000 Six-handed No Limit Hold'em event. The turning event for Robert was where his set of Queens crushed Rui Cao's two pair, 10's and 9's. Propelling him into the lead with 950,000 chips. From there he continued to build his stack to a very healthy 1,213,000 chips - he is currently lying in fourth place and if he were to exit the tournament now he would leave with a guaranteed $37,379.

Going into day 3 there are only 16 players remaining. Robert is way up there with the best of them and stands a very good chance of taking this bracelet event down, as well as the first prize of $1,003,163!

Go Robert - we are behind you all the way!!!

More 2009 WSOP news

Created: 6/17/2009 1:29:16 PM

With the 2009 WSOP in full swing, the action is fierce, an astounding amount of money is changing hands, newcomers are capturing their first WSOP Bracelets and the pro’s are giving it their best to improve on their existing records. Here’s some of the latest 2009 WSOP highlights, since our last update:

Another first WSOP Bracelet captured:
2009 WSOP Event #15 $5,000 No Limit Hold-Em: A very emotional Brian Lemke captured his first ever WSOP Bracelet and a grande $692,658 in cash. He dedicated his winnings to his late cousin, PokerRoad Radio Producer and former PokerNews employee Justin Shronk, who passed away in April this year. Lemke has only featured at major tournaments a few times since 2006.

A record fast final table:
2009 WSOP Event #16 $1,500 7-Card Stud: One of the most successful tournament players Jeffrey Lisandro took the lead from an early stage and finished off his opponents at the final table in less than three and a half hours to capture his 2nd WSOP Bracelet and collect a prize of $127,975. Prior to this, Lisandro boasted 42 cashes at major poker tournaments already.

The new Ladies World Champion:
2009 WSOP Event # 17 $1,500 Ladies World Championship: After 2 marathon days of intense poker, renowned cash games specialist Lisa Hamilton captured the title of the new 2009 Ladies World Champion and received a hefty sum of $195,390. This was her first live poker tournament, as she usually plays cash games.

Young player outlasts the toughest playing field:
2009 WSOP Event #18 $10,000 World Championship Omaha Hi/Lo: 26-year old Daniel Alaei whose most notable winnings are in high-limit cash games, outlasted one of the toughest playing fields to capture his second WSOP Bracelet and a mouth-watering prize of $445,898. To do this, he had to outsmart top poker pro’s including the likes of Daniel Negreanu; Doyle Brunson; Barry Greenstein; Mike “The Mouth” Matusow and Annie Duke.

Online poker whiz captures his 2nd 2009 WSOP Bracelet:
2009 WSOP Event #19 $2,500 6-Handed No Limit Hold’em: Respected online poker player Brock “t soprano” Parker seems to be on the roll as he captured his 2nd 2009 WSOP Bracelet and an astounding cash prize.

The first English WSOP champion in 2 years:
Event #20 $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em: In what he describes as “… the highlight of my life so far,” the 23-year old British poker player John-Paul Kelly claimed his first 209 WSOP bracelet and a cash prize of $194,045. In the process, he thwarted the attempts of 663 other poker players, including Erik Seidel who was gunning for his 9th WSOP Bracelet. Although still very young, Kelly has made it to a WSOP final table before and already cashed in 3 times at WSOP events.

Newcomer triumphs after marathon final table:
2009 WSOP Event #21 $3,000 HORSE: After what can probably be described as the longest final table to date at the 2009 WSOP, a reasonable newcomer to the poker scene, the Canadian Zac Fellows captured his first WSOP Bracelet, together with a substantial cash prize of $311,899.

WPT Champion claims his first WSOP Bracelet:
2009 WSOP Event #23: World Championship No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw: In his relatively short poker career the 24-year old Nick Schulman already boasts 2 WPT Titles and in excess of $3,5 million in poker earnings. And apart from another $279,742, he can now also add a WSOP Bracelet to his already impressive poker résumé.

Phil Ivey captures his 7th WSOP Bracelet:
2009 WSOP Event #25 $2,500 Mixed Omaha/7-Card Stud Hi/Lo: Illustrating why he is regarded as one of the best poker players in the world, Phil Ivey claimed his 7th WSOP Bracelet and another $220,538 in prize money.

De Wolfe becomes the 2nd ever Triple Crown winner:
2009 WSOP Event #27 $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo: Roland de Wolfe not only captured his first WSOP Bracelet, but made poker history by becoming the 2nd player ever to win a WSOP, EPT and WPT event.

Another 2009 WSOP Event that has caught our eye, is Event #29 $10,00 World Championship Heads-Up No Limit Hold’em. Spotted playing his heart out to chase after his 11th WSOP Bracelet, is Johnny Chan. Should he manage to win, he will tie Phil Hellmuth’s record. To find out if he succeeds, or for more 2009 WSOP news, keep your eye on this spot.

When last has a pro won the WSOP Main Event?

Created: 7/29/2008 2:07:27 PM

With the reoccurring trend of the relatively inexperienced players taking the World Series of Poker Main Event bracelet the question on the Poker community’s lips is: “When can we expect another professional poker champion?” The big guns on the poker scene have surely shined at the side events of the 2008 WSOP, to such an extent, that 2008 has at some stage been dubbed “The Year of the pro.” However, the final table for the Main Event of 2008 WSOP has been named, and one has to wonder: “Where are the pro’s??” As a matter of fact, the last time that an established poker pro has claimed the ultimate victory, was in 2001, by Carlos Mortensen!!

One of the most celebrated events that spurred interest in the World Series of Poker for many poker hopefuls from around the world, was the meteoric rise of Chris Moneymaker, from a newcomer to the scene, to a poker star that outshone the best of the best. Moneymaker grabbed headlines by taking the 2003 WSOP Main Event bracelet… A feat that had him pocket a prize of two and a half million dollars at the time!

His accomplishment made everyone realize that you don’t have to be a seasoned poker professional to win big, and the number of participants in the tournament has grown exponentially. In just the very next year the competitor field had multiplied threefold and the stakes had doubled! And ever since then, there was just no looking back, as for the last three years has there has never been less than five thousand entrants!

No doubt the professionals have been having a hard time with the astonishing volume of competition. And one has to wonder- will a true poker pro ever win the Main Event of the WSOP again…??

Yes, I Agree

The November Nine Unmasked

Created: 7/23/2008 11:04:32 AM

Surprisingly, there is a complete lack of truly seasoned poker professionals who made it to the final table of the 2008 WSOP. It is rather nine relative amateurs who outplayed the huge field of 6,844 from across the globe and who are preparing themselves for the final table in November. The lives of these nine players, now known as “The November Nine,” will never be the same again. Almost overnight, they will be elevated into poker stardom, scrutinized by everyone who is anyone on the poker scene and their every move will be followed by journalists and ESPN-cameras. Yes, for the next few months, these nine newcomers will be watched under a microscope, as they prepare themselves for the battle of their lives in their fairly short lived poker careers. So let us look at who they are:

Dennis Phillips will have the comfort of entering the final table as the chipleader, with a staggering $26,295,000 sized chip stack. Phillips who works as an account manager at a commercial trucking company, will be the oldest of the group in age, but one of the least experienced.

With a hefty chip stack of $24,000,000 and some tournament experience the Russian Ivan Demidov could be the favorite for this year’s bracelet. Ivan boasts a final table finish in the 2006 Russian Poker Championship, a 3rd place finish in the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic and a 11th place finish in a $1,000 No limit Hold’em in this year’s WSOP.

Before this year, the Canadian Scott Montgomery’s poker profile left allot to be desired… But after a very successful run, 2008 has brought him the spotlight of the poker world. He kicked of the year by playing his way into the final table of the World Poker Tour’s L.A. Poker Classic. He now hold’s a stack of $19,690,000. Right after the play at the WSOP ceased, he made his way over to the Bellagio Cup IV where he made the final table.

The youngest player to make the grades for the November Nine, Peter Eastgate, will have whatever time he has left before November to make up in skill what he lacks in age. The Scandinavian youngster has a $18,375,000 stack which he’ll have to utilize cunningly to claim the “Youngest Bracelet Winner” title, a record which Phil Hellmuth currently holds.

Perhaps one of the most colorful characters to grace the November Nine, is chess player turned poker player Ylon Schwartz who played his way into the final table exploiting the field of novices. The New Yorker sits on a $12,525,000 chip stack to enter the final table with.

Darus Suharto might be on the wrong end of the chip stack with his $12,520,000 but the Canadian poker pro (who had won his way into the Main Event through a satellite) might still gain the edge on his game to become this year’s champion.

Most likely the most well known player at the Final table this year (with five cashes behind his name), the 28 year old David “Chino” Rheem will enter the November Nine with a $10,230,000 chip stack.

Not many players can boast a seat in the final table with only around 18 months of poker experience. The Texan Craig Marquis will have to pull out some tricks from under his sleeves to play his way out of the ‘underdog’ spot in November.

Sitting with an alarming chip stack, business analyst turned poker pro Kelly Kim will need a strong dose of luck coupled with diligent play to not be busted first with his short stack of a mere $2,620,000 in chips.

That sums up the faces to be seen around the Final Table in November, where one lucky player will go home with the bracelet and US$9 million cash prize, to become the envy of every poker professional in the world!

Watch this space for any related updates on the November Nine who will be playing the final table of 2008 WSOP in just a few months.

The November Nine

Created: 7/16/2008 8:39:51 AM

15/07/2008 This year’s World Series of Poker main event came to an abrupt halt, when the field of 6844 eager hopefuls was reduced to a mere nine players. The tenth place finisher Dean Hamrick would not go out without a fight, standing his ground for three hours before he was eventually eliminated by Craig Marquis.

His final hand would see him pushing the last of his chips all in, losing to Marquis’s pocket queens holding Ace (spades), Jack (clubs).

The remaining nine players are:

Seat 1: Dennis Phillips - 26,295,000
Seat 2: Craig Marquis - 10,210,000
Seat 3: Ylon Schwartz - 12,525,000
Seat 4: Scott Montgomery - 19,690,000
Seat 5: Darus Suharto - 12,520,000
Seat 6: Chino Rheem - 10,230,000
Seat 7: Ivan Demidov - 24,400,000
Seat 8: Kelly Kim - 2,620,000

Andre “Shuffle” Johnstone cashes at 2008 WSOP

Created: 7/14/2008 10:10:30 AM

14 July 2008. This past weekend ended on a high for 3 Piggs Poker regular Andre “Shuffle” Johnstone, who finished in an impressive 316th position at the Main Event of the 2008 WSOP. This is no small feat, as the Shuffle had to outplay a record field of 6,844 entrants from all around the world. For his efforts, he cashed in around $32,000.00!
“This was great for my confidence, I achieved my dream of 3 years ago of playing in the main event and cashing,” said Johnstone enthusiastically. Shuffle managed to win his package to the 2008 WSOP through 3 Piggs Poker's WSOP Loyalty Program.

Here is how the Shuffle recalls the action during the final hand, as noted in the Facebook Group “Where in the world is Shuffle.” A solid player raised to 17k in mid position, after which the button called. Johnstone called from the big blind while holding 2d2c. The flop showed Kh3c2h. He then decided to check raise the flop if anyone bet. The player who raised originally, bet 24k. The one on the button folded and Johnstone re-raised to 68k. Unfortunately he did not count on getting re-raised by 90k when he only had 224k left. He moved in and was called by 33. Needless to say he couldn’t improve, and was eliminated in the top 5% of positions.

Andre commented on how grueling the tournament was with its emotional intensity and mood swings, but when asked if he will do it again, he immediately answered: “absolutely!” The 3 Piggs Poker Team wishes to congratulate Johnstone on this achievement. “Shuffle, you have truly made us proud!” says Wendy Graaf, Group Marketing Manager of Piggs Peak Group of Casinos.

Charles Barkley also player even after recently pledging to take a break from gambling. The 45 year old former NBA star was recently sued in May by the Wynn casino for failing to pay back gambling loans. Barkley said that he would donate any winnings to charity and was not planning on staying in Las Vegas for long. He paid back his markers shortly after the casino filed a civil complaint against him. “I can’t gamble, so I gotta drink”, Barkley joked with Phil Hellmuth, 11 time bracelet winner, shortly after he was invited by Phil to join him for a cocktail.

The celebrity players donated their prize money from this, the second “Ante Up for Africa” event to charities working within the Darfur region of Sudan. The tournament benefited two charities in particular:

• ENOUGH – a project co-founded in 2007 by the International Crisis Group and the Center for American Progress
• Not On Our Watch – a group co-founded by Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, George Clooney and Brad Pitt

Cheadle, one of the founders of the event remarked at the be start of the event, “It’s great to see everybody”, “Don’t expect to win, because it’s mine.” Unfortunately Cheadle was eliminated by Alica in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell when his pair of jacks could hold up to Centrell’s queens.

Poker icon, Annie Duke said “Charity doesn’t have to be boring, it doesn’t have to be a burden. We want people to have a really good time.” The total prize pool at the beginning of the tournament was US$418,000. J.C. Tran wins first WSOP Bracelet

Created: 7/2/2008 9:07:23 AM

1 July 2008. JC Tran has a very impressive number of top money finishes behind his name, for a variety of the World Poker Tour tournaments. But now he can also include WSOP Bracelet holder on his poker resume. J.C. triumphed at 2008 WSOP Event #49 $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em, claiming not only that coveted bracelet, but also a grande $631,170 for his victory.

This is how the final hand went down: Tran raised preflop and Nielsen called. When the board flopped 8h Qs 2h, Nielsen check-called Tran's bet. The turn showed 4d, after which Nielsen checked again. When Tran raised, Nielsen went all in. Tran made the call, holding Kc Qc, which obviously crushed Nielsen’s Qd Jh. The only way that Nielsen could still win, was when a jack landed on the river. But luck was on Tran’s side as the river brought 2h - sending Nielsen home, nevertheless collecting $389,557 for his second place finish.

The other players who were seated at the final table with J.C. Tran, finished as follows:
3rd place- Peter Ngyuen, $233,734
4th place- Joe Pelton, $191,068
5th place- Chad Sui, $150,257
6th place- Jesper Hoog, $113,157
7th place- Robert Kalb, $85,331
8th place- Christoph Köhnen, $58,248.

You can’t bluff a lie detector

Created: 7/1/2008 4:46:20 PM

Many players participating in the Event 42 No Limit Hold’em Seniors World Championship of the 2008 WSOP, learnt that you can’t bluff a man immune to lies after facing Dan Lacourse behind the poker tables.

Lacourse played his way though a staggering field of up to 2,217 players, even defeating poker greats like the legendary Amarillo Slim and Men “The Master” Nguyen by applying his craft to his card play. He pocketed a handsome, $368,759 and a coveted 2008 WSOP bracelet for his triumph.

Lacourse’s secret weapon is his developed observation of the timing speed and reactions that he has gained though 27 years experience as a polygraph examiner for the Lucas Sherri’s Department.

After agreeing that the winner would buy dinner, the two players from Ohio commenced play. Lacourse would be going heads up against another community serviceman Dale Eberle. The battle lasted only two hands when Eberle called all-in holding a pair of kings against Lacourse’s trip nines.

Eberle walked away with a runner up prize of ($ 235,141) and a free dinner. For all your news and snippets for what’s going on at the 2008 WSOP, keep your eyes on this spot for all the latest updates.

Poker legend wins WSOP "players" championship”

Created: 7/1/2008 4:40:59 PM

30 June 2008. After a grueling 5-day poker marathon, Scotty Nguyen finally outplayed some of the best poker pro’s, as well as some of the biggest cash games players on the poker scene, to win Event #45, the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship at the 2008 WSOP. For his incredible performance, Scotty received his 5th WSOP Bracelet, the Chip Reese Memorial trophy, as well as a staggering first prize of $1,989,120!

The H.O.R.S.E. championship is regarded by many as the true test of a champion, as during the tournament, a combination of five different poker variants is played. The general consensus is that you can only be regarded as a great poker player, if you are an expert of every type of poker, not only of Texas Hold’em.

And, Scotty has now certainly proved to be one of the greatest poker players. Seated at the final table with him, were Matt Glanz; Huck Seed; Patrick Bueno; Lyle Berman; Michael DeMichele; as well as Barry Greenstein and Erick Lindgren who are both contenders for the Player of the Year Award.

There was some pretty aggressive play seen amongst this tough crowd, and the first eliminations took place reasonably quickly, leaving Lindgren, DeMichele and Scotty for some three-way action. From here, the tournament went into marathon mode, as it took around 200 hands before Lindgren was finally busted.

Going into heads-up play, Scotty had 12,140,000 chips versus the 2,660,000 of DeMichele. It therefore only took him a short while to finally knock out his young opponent. The final hand was Texas Hold’em and here is how it played out:

DeMichele raised preflop, holding Ac 3h. After some contemplation, Nguyen made one of his trademark remarks: "It's gonna be all over, baby." He then raised with his Ad10h, after which DeMichele went all-in. The board flopped As 9h 6h, giving Scotty the advantage at this point. When the turn brought 7c, there was only one way that DeMichele could still win: by getting a three on the river. However, 4s was flipped, sending DeMichele home in second place, collecting a grande $1,243,200!

Complete newcomer wins first WSOP Bracelet

Created: 7/1/2008 4:18:21 PM

30 June 2008. Alexandre Gomes made poker history at the 2008 WSOP in more ways than one, when he claimed the victory at Event #48, $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em. Not only is he the first Brazilian poker player ever to pick up a WSOP Bracelet, but he is also a complete newcomer to the poker scene. Believe it or not, he has only been playing poker for around 6 months! For his first place finish, Alexandre collected up a handsome $770,540. Not to be frowned upon, for someone who was until very recently, a practicing attorney!

Gomes outsmarted a rather large field of 2,317 players who entered for this side event, to finally go heads-up with Marco Johnson. Johnson doubled through Gomes a few times, before he hit that hand that sent him to the rail. Johnson went all-in over the top of Gomes' preflop raise, whilst holding Js Qs. Gomes had As Ks, and the board showed 3h 2h 4d Ac 4c. Johnson nevertheless walked away with $491,273 for finishing second.

The rest of the players who finished in the money at this tournament, were:

- 3rd- Ryan D'Angelo- $326,812
- 4th- Robert Brewer- $274,101
- 5th- Alan Cutler- $223,497
- 6th- Kirill Gerasimov- $177,111
- 7th- Sverre Sundbo- $134,942
- 8th- Gabe Costner- $103,315

Cyril Jassinowsky performs at WSOP

Created: 6/19/2008 12:28:16 PM

3 Piggs Poker regular Cyril Jassinowsky performs at 2008 WSOP.

2008 WSOP Event # $10,000 Limit Hold'em World Championship drew a strong field of 218 players, comprising the ELITE of the poker scene, including big names to the likes of JC Tran; Andy Bloch and Eric Buchman. But it was one of our local players, 3 Piggs Poker regular Cyril, aka Cy, Jassinowsky that made it to that final table! Seated at the final table with him, were: Andy Bloch; Rob Hollink; Tommy Hang; Jerrod Ankenman; Chris Vitch; Brock Parker; J.C. Tran and Aaron Katz. Cy held it up brilliantly, and it was only during the 64th hand of the final play, that he was finally eliminated in the 8th place, cashing in a substantial $66,599!

This is how the action went down during his last hand of the tournament: Leading it out from the button was Andy Bloch, with Rob Hollink bumping it to three bests from the small blind. Tommy Hang then continued the action, by making it four bets. Cy called, going all in with his R40,000 chips. Bloch then folded, but Rob made the call. Kc 6d 9c came on the flop, Rob Hollink checked, after which Tommy led out. Rob bowed out, Tommy flipped a pair of Queens and Cy flipped Ad 2d. The turn brought 5d and the river 7c; knocking Cy out in the 8th place.

“Cy clearly illustrated that our local Southern African players have what it takes to hold it up against the best of the best, and we are curious to see how he will fare during the rest of the 2008 WSOP, and of course at that Main Event,” says Wendy Graaf, Group Marketing Manager of Piggs Peak Group of Casinos. From the 3 Piggs Poker Team: “You go Cyril, we are sure that you will continue to make is proud!” For updated news and snippets of our local players’ performance at the 2008 WSOP, keep your eye on this spot!

Another big gun walks off with a bracelet at 2008 WSOP

Created: 6/19/2008 9:06:30 AM

After playing his way though a field of 457 determined players at Event 24, Pot-Limit Hold’em/Omaha at the WSOP Max “the Italian Pirate” Pescatori claimed victory and added another WSOP bracelet to his arm, as well as a $246,471 pay day on Sunday 15t June 2008.

Winning would not be easy though, following a phenomenal performance from the Dutch Kyle Kloeckner, who at his second appearance at the WSOP made his first final table debut.

To add to his extraordinary initiation into the poker spotlight the youngster even managed to take down Allan Cunningham, who boasts a remarkable 5 bracelets to his name!

The final battle ensued, with Pescatori going heads up against Kloeckner… With a triple chip lead over Kloeckner, things were looking promising for the Italian Pirate.

The final hand saw Kloeckner call a monster bet on a short stack, holding J-10-10-3. The board showed K-J-3-2-2 with three diamonds and Pescatori took the pot with K-J-8-7 (including two diamonds). For his runner up finish, Kloeckner collected $152,410.

So if you’re amongst those who are on their way to try their luck at the WSOP, take note: Before you bluff Max “The Italian Pirate” Pescatori at the poker tables, just remember that you are staring at a player who has two WSOP bracelets under his belt, more than $2 Million in total live earnings and an impressive TEN first place finishes!

On a very positive note though- considering the performances of the big names on the poker scene at the 2008 WSOP so far, the phrase that fills the hallways at the moment is: “The Year of the Pro.” However, what is worth mentioning is that there has been an equal number of newcomers to the scene, like Kloeckner, who have managed to outplay many of the pro’s to reach the final tables. So although there are not that many newbies collecting bracelets, a surprising number of them, are definitely cashing in! For your updated news and snippets on what’s happening at the WSOP, keep your eye on this space!

Man vs Robot

Created: 6/19/2008 8:58:18 AM

Will you pit your poker skills against a poker playing robot?

Paranoid Sci-fi enthusiasts may believe that the human race will come to its knees, to submit to Artificial Intelligence and giant robots… While this may not be the case, the Poker scene is in for a ride as the AI dubbed: “Polaris 2” penetrates the Poker World.

While its first bid proved unsuccessful last year, after its trial run against some top poker professionals failed (two losses, a win and a draw, playing against Phil Laak and Ali Eslami)… Polaris has already developed to the point where it can easily rule standard poker player. However, technology evolves particularly fast…And already the next test matches against the upgraded version of Polaris have been cast in stone and a batch of professional poker coaches are set to compete against the Artificial Intelligence in Early July this year. This is bound to at least create some diversion from the happenings at the 2008 WSOP, as it will be presented at the 2008 Gaming Life Expo at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, in Vegas.

Will the human players remain competent against the machine, or will the enhanced abilities prove impossible to beat? Polaris’ most intimidating new feature is the ability to adjust its strategy, through consistently observing its opponent’s play style!

The tournament will now take place again and preserve its: 500 duplicate hand Texas Hold ‘em format, whilst the competition will be slightly trickier…so how will you feel about pitting your poker skills against that of a machine…?? Watch this space to see how the human team fares against the robot, in early July.

Kenny Tran takes his first WSOP 2008 bracelet!

Created: 6/19/2008 8:52:29 AM

On Father’s Day, during the 2008 WSOP $10,000 Heads-Up Championship, Kenny Tran beat Alec Torelli in two straight matches, and proudly collected his first WSOP Bracelet, as well as a handsome prize of $539,056! Now we’d say that THAT makes for a VERY nice Father’s Day present!

Kenny was very public about how he did this. “I definitely have a strategy. I like to grind people out and make them feel bored. I just torture them and let them finally make a mistake, “he said. And this strategy definitely seemed to cut it for him.

Day 3 saw both the semifinal and final matches being played out. So let’s take a look at how the action went down:

Recap of the Semi-finals

Jonathan Jaffe vs Kenny Tran

Jonathan Jaffe was initially on a roll, kicking off this semi-final match with seven straight hands against Tran. But, they were fairly small pots, so it only took one monstrous bet on Tran’s side to recover. This occurred during Hand #26, when Jaffe was forced to fold to Tran's monstrous 500,000 bet on the river.

Jaffe quickly regained control a few hands later, when his two pair of kings and tens edged out Tran's queens and tens. But things heated up again some hands later when the board showed A-Q-Q. After lengthy consideration, Jaffe fired out a huge bet which amounted to approximately 40% of the pot. Tran responded by taking an equal amount of time before he too pushed out a substantial re-raise. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife as a lengthy stare-down followed. Jaffe caved under the pressure, and Tran triumphantly showed a 7-5 for the bluff!

Going into the final hand, Tran just had the chip lead. Both players raised and re-raised pre-flop, which finally lead to Jaffe going all in. Tran then showed some of that grinding that he refers to when he shares his strategy. Painstakingly taking his time, he talked to himself and then shocked everyone by making that call. Luck was on Tran’s side with his pocket Jacks against Jaffe's K-8, and his luck continued as the rest of the board remained to his advantage. Tran advanced to the finals as he sent Jonathan Jaffe home with $108,288.

Vanessa Selbst vs. Alec Torelli

Vanessa Selbst and Alec Torelli were both clearly first testing the waters, by limping in with their first few hands. But the action kicked into gear during Hand #17. Torelli raised pre-flop, after which Selbst re-raised and bet the J-J-6 flop. Taking his time, Torelli called. The turn brought an Ace and Selbst fired out another bet, which Torelli called again. When the board rivered a K, both of them checked. Torelli showed a pair of nines, leading Selbst to muck her hand. This hand was definitive for Torelli, as he gained the chip lead, and managed to maintain that for the remainder of the match.

The match came to an end during Hand # 35, when both players went all in on the turn. The board showed J-5-4-10, at which point Selbst still had the advantage with her K-10 over Torelli's K-Q. The river miraculously brought that nine to complete Torelli's straight- and Selbst was busted. For her effort, she cashed in $108,288.

Finals Recap

Kenny Tran vs. Alec Torelli

Match One:

Kicking off slowly too, it took until Hand #18 for anything significant to occur and see Alec Torelli pulling into the lead. Torelli bet 72,000 pre-flop, after which Tran raised to 260,000. Torelli contemplated his options for a while before he re-raised to 585.000. Tran was visibly reluctant but made that call. When the flop showed 10d 9d 8d, Torelli went all in and scared Tran out of the pot. This lead to Torelli having almost twice as many chips with his 3,231,000 to Tran's 1,889,000.

Tran was persistent however, and slowly but surely grinded it back to even over the next dozen hands. He finally pulled slightly ahead on hand #32, when Torelli bet 72,000 preflop, which Tran called. Both players checked down the flop of J-8-4 and the subsequent king on the turn. When the river showed an Ace, Tran checked again and Torelli bet 100,000. Tran had a drink of water, hesitated somewhat and then check-raised it to 400,000. This time Torelli was the one who let the hand go.

From there it was a rollercoaster ride, with both players taking turns to go up and then down again. It was only Hand #93, which finally saw the end of the match. Tran opened for 110,000 and Torelli responded without hesitation, by re-raising to 350,000. Torelli then went all in on the 8-4-2 flop, which Tran called. At that stage Tran had made middle pair with A-4, while Torelli was on a thin draw for A-J. The board turned up a seven and an ace, busting Torelli and awarding the first match of the finals to Tran.

Match Two:

Torelli was evidently making an attempt to come back from his drawback when he kicked off very aggressively. But Tran was a force to be reckoned with and the match was stretched out for almost just as long as the first one. Torelli admittedly gained the advantage during the early stages of play, but after 65 hands of play, the two players were more or less evenly stacked.

The final hand came during Hand #80. Tran opened betting with 110,000 and Torelli made the call. After a Qc 7c 4s flop, Tran bet 150,000, which Torelli re-raised to 430,000. Tran then took it all the way up to a monstrous 1,030,000. The heat was clearly on, but Torelli took only a brief moment before he went all in. Tran made the call showing Ac 8c for the nut flush draw and Torelli tabled Q-10 for top pair. An 8h fell on the turn, giving Tran additional outs. But it was that Jc on the river that brought Tran the flush and won him the match. Alec Torelli received $336,896 for his second plae finish.

Looking at the outcome of the side events building up to the Main Event at the 2008 WSOP, there is no doubt that the professionals have been dominating the scene. To such an extent actually, that 2008 has now been dubbed the “Year of the Pro.” Will this good run of the pro’s continue into the Main Event, or will there be some similar surprises as at the final table as in 2007…?? Keep your eye on this spot, for the updated news of the 2008 WSOP.

Online Poker Guru features at WSOP

Created: 6/5/2008 1:18:11 PM

The hugely successful 21-year old Internet poker player Mike Sowers, alias SowersUNCC, featured at the final table of the first large-field event of the WSOP 2008, which kicked off on the 30th of May 2008. Sowers illustrated some excellent play throughout, showing no sign of being intimidated by the seasoned big guns he was facing across the poker table.

The final play commenced with seating arrangements as follows:
Mike Sowers in Seat 1 with 675,000 chips; Chris Bell in Seat 2 with 455,000; Amit Makhija in Seat 3 with 525,000; Patrik Antonius in Seat 4 with 230,000; Andy Bloch in the chip lead in Seat 5 with 2,115,000; Mike Sexton in Seat 6 with 1,130,000; Phil Laak in Seat 7 with 425,000; Nenad Menic in Seat 8 with 1,200,000 and Kathy Liebert in Seat 9 with her 285,000 chips.

During the first hand, Phil Laak got busted by Patrick Antonius and he was therefore the first to be eliminated in the 9th place. Shortly thereafter, ironically enough, the young Sowers was caught up in a battle of generations, as he faced the much older Mike Sexton. Sowers raised pot over the top of Sexton's preflop raise. But when Sexton went all in over the top, he found himself pot committed with his 9H 4S Sowers called, and was up against Sexton’s QH QD . The board came down in Sexton’s favor with KS 8C 3C AC JS, and Sowers collected $99,264 for his eighth-place finish.

It was Nenad Medic who then eventually triumphed after going heads-up with the tenacious Andy Bloch. Nenad claimed his first WSOP bracelet ever, and $794,112 worth of prize money. Andy Bloch won $448,048 and the rest of the top finishes looked as follows: Kathy Liebert 3rd with $306,064; Mike Sexton 4th with $248,160; Amit Makhija 5th with $198,528; Chris Bell came 6th with $157,168 and Patrick Antonius finished 7th with $124,080.

Since last year, Sowers has been seen around final tables of major live tournaments frequently. In April 2008 he finished 17th at the 2008 EPT San Remo Main Event and cashed in € 16,000. At the 2008 Borgata Winter Open in January, he won Event #12 No Limit Hold’em and won himself a handsome $399,000. And end of last year, during October 2007, he won Event #7 of the Aruba Classic, for which he collected $35,730.

No doubt, the perception that online poker players cannot convert to live tournaments successfully, is a myth. The young Sowers is clearly destined for big things in the poker environment, and we expect to see a lot more of him. Saab outplayed 316 international opponents and for that he collected a handsome $280,000 USD for himself in prize money. And it was none other than an Ace that cracked the deal for him.

This is how the final action went down: The flop brought an A 7 4. Roh bet 90,000 after which Saab re-raised to 300,000. Roh then moved all in and Saab called. Roh showed a K 4, and Saab who had the advantage at this point, had an A 8. The turn and the river remained in Saab’s favor, as it brought a 9 and a 10, knocking Roh out. For his second place finish, Roh took home US $150,000.

The rest of the players at the final table finished in the following order:
3rd Satoru Ishii of Japan- USD $100,000
4th Kwang So Lee of Korea- USD $73,000
5th Michele Ferrari of Italy- USD $55,000
6th Man Jin Yun of South Korea- USD $45,000
7th Don Cormona a local from Philippines- USD $35,000
8th Terry Gonzaga- USD $25,000

Upon the conclusion of the event, Matt Savage, Tournament Director of the APT, made an official announcement that the next APT event is set to take place at StarWorld Hotel & Casino, Macau, from 26-30 August 2008. This event will have a mouthwatering guaranteed prize pool of USD $1,000,000! For more news and updates on all the latest international and local poker events, keep your eye on this spot.

WSOP Schedule changes for ESPN Coverage

Created: 2/25/2008 7:50:15 AM

Some minor changes to the 2008 World Series of Poker Schedule have been effected, to allow ESPN optimal coverage of the H.O.R.S.E. World Championship. With a steep buy-in of $50,000 into this championship, word has it that these changes are most probably geared towards making the H.OR.S.E the actual Main Event- although this is yet to be formally announced.

The H.O.R.S.E. event was initially scheduled for 12h00 on Sunday, June 22, but has now been moved to 17h00 on Wednesday, June 25. The event is being swapped with the $2,500 Buy-in Deuce-to-Seven Triple-Draw Low Tournament, which will now take place at 12h00 on Sunday, June 22.

The WSOP 2008 still kicks off on the 30th of May 2008 and finishes on the 16th of July. ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network), will air the coverage of this international poker event immediately after, in July.

As we endeavour to keep you informed of the latest poker news and relevant updates on major poker events, keep your eye on this space.

Forgiving

Last Monday I beat Nexus_za quad tens with a royal flush. We missed the bad beat jackpot because the rake was R0.25 short. That is what one call a real bad beat. Today I received a nice little whiskey gift voucher from Piggs. Not enough to drown my sorrows, but a nice gesture. Thanks Sandy and the Pigss team.
