When you start to play poker, whether it is in a poker room at a land casino, or online, you could very easily feel like a foreigner in a country whose language you don’t understand. The poker environment has a very distinct language of its own. We suggest you familiarize yourself with this first, before you face your opponents across a table. Those who don’t, are frowned upon, and will quickly find themselves kicked out of poker games. Everyone knows that poker will not be poker without its quota of bluffing. We would advise you however, to leave bluffing for the next level, until you are at least an intermediate- or advanced player. In the meantime, just take careful note of the poker tells and check your own body language, to prevent your opponents from knowing the strength of your hand- based on how you react to the cards you are dealt. Apart from that, rather focus on the strength of your hand and how you can make the most of it. The most important poker strategy you have to follow right now, is: “Know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em.” Many newbies make the mistake of playing too many hands, just to remain in the game. Until you are experienced and confident enough, you are bound to get burnt if you overplay a weak hand. If you really have a slim chance of building up a good hand with the cards you have been dealt, do the wise thing and rather fold’em.
Last but not least, is your “bank roll.” This is the term that is used for the amount of money or poker chips you have available to play with.
